Presidents’ Day, a national holiday that honors President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln, will be celebrated on February 17th of 2020. Many people celebrate Presidents’ Day by eating cherry pie, which legend tells us was Washington’s favorite dessert. There is another legend about cherry trees and young George.

“The cherry tree myth is the most well-known and longest enduring legend about George Washington. In the original story, when Washington was six years old he received a hatchet as a gift and damaged his father’s cherry tree. When his father discovered what he had done, he became angry and confronted him. Young George bravely said, “I cannot tell a lie…I did cut it with my hatchet.” Washington’s father embraced him and rejoiced that his son’s honesty was worth more than a thousand trees.”

In Lebanon, we too, like our cherry pie. Back by popular request, the CLA will once again serve cherry pie, made by Zig’s Bakery on Friday, February 14th from 9 am to 1 pm and Saturday February 15th from 9 am until it is gone! Come visit us at the Lebanon Farmers Market and share a little slice of history for $3.00.
